What happens when private companies take control of prison operations? Check out the Lake Erie Correctional Institute in Ohio for the terrible truth. In 2011, responding to budget concerns, Ohio sold a state prison to Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the single largest private prison corporation in the country.

An audit conducted just one year later found horrifying conditions and abuses at the now-privately run prison. So the prison was given a second chance—and again failed inspection four months later. ThinkProgress on where things stand now:

“Independent reports continue to illuminate filthy, broken facilities, as well as much higher rates of crime and violence in and around the prison…The Lake Erie prison is now reportedly overcrowded at 130 percent capacity, with single-person cells holding 3 inmates each, according to internal documents obtained by the ACLU.”

On Tuesday the ACLU submitted a report on the prison’s decline, calling for safety improvements. It found that inmate assaults on other prisoners have risen 180% since 2010, and assaults on staff members are up 300%. The very day that the ACLU’s report came out, the prison had to restrict 500 inmates to their beds because two fights broke out. Still, according to a local news report, CCA spokesman Steve Owen “said the company is proud of the services it provides at the prison.”

CCA has gotten away with housing 30% more people than it has space for and providing inhumane conditions just so it could make more money. What company wouldn’t be proud?
